Spanish to English Interpreter Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Fluency in both Spanish and English, spoken and written
- Minimum of 1 year of Spanish/English interpretation experience OR 6 months of healthcare experience with completion of a 40-hour medical interpreter training program
- Must successfully pass a Medical Interpretation Exam as part of the hiring process
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology and cultural sensitivity
- Excellent communication, active listening, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism in a healthcare setting
- Ability to work independently and remain calm in stressful situations
Key Responsibilities
- Provide accurate and complete interpretation between Spanish and English using both simultaneous and consecutive interpretation methods
- Maintain the original message's meaning, tone, content, and intent
- Communicate effectively between patients, healthcare providers, and staff
- Use dictionaries, medical terminology guides, and other reference materials to ensure accurate interpretation
- Compile and verify terminology to maintain consistency and accuracy
- Coordinate with other interpreters to ensure adequate patient coverage when needed
- Assist healthcare staff with scheduling, patient calls, and general communication
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and organizational policies
- Support effective communication between patients and healthcare providers
- Perform additional duties as assigned
